How text becomes binary
Computers store text as numbers. ASCII gives the 128 basic English characters a number from 0 to 127 — “H” is 72, which is 01001000 in binary. UTF-8 extends this to every character in Unicode by using one to four bytes: “é” takes two bytes and “🍁” takes four. This converter always uses UTF-8, the encoding of almost every web page.

Frequently asked questions
What’s “Hello” in binary?
01001000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111.
Can I paste binary without spaces?
Yes. Unspaced binary is split into 8-bit groups (and hex into pairs) automatically.
Why does an emoji become four bytes?
UTF-8 uses four bytes for characters outside the Basic Multilingual Plane, which includes most emoji.
